Good Morning and Welcome to Tuesday from my Atlantic Life in Hatteras š
So yesterday, after completing some things on my To Do List, I couldn't resist taking a drive on the beach. I packed up my āGo Bagā with my blanket, journal and a mug of hot chocolate, got bundled up in plenty layers - and off I setā¦
First was a quick stop at the old Cape Hatteras Lighthouse beach....I love this spot when the ocean is wild....It was incredible - here you go...
Then I headed back down NC12 to Ramp 49
My View...
After getting onto the beach, I found a good spot and parked up with Jakeās tailgate facing the ocean. I had just climbed into the back of Jake and gotten settled to watch the incredible tumultuous Atlantic, when a magnificent pelican came gliding along the rough watersā edge, landed on the sandā¦.and then proceeded to walk over towards meā¦
Not quite as graceful on land š„°
Closer and closer he came waddling over ā not quite as graceful as when he was drifting on the ocean currents. He decided to stop right in front of where I was sittingā¦.I felt incredibly privileged that he had chosen to sit with me for a while.
So, there I sat, drinking my hot chocolate, as he settled in to rest his powerful wings. The wind was howling, and my ocean churned relentlessly, but we sat together in a wonderful companionable silence.
Very occasionally a car would pass, and the occupants would stop to take photos of this rather unusual scene - me sitting in the back of the Jeep, writing in my journal, whilst a beautiful pelican sat, keeping me company.
My pelican looked like a wise old soul, and when I would speak to him (yes, I did speak to a pelican!!!! I used to speak to my horses all the time, and of course I talk to Bailey, Bodie and Pumpkin), he wasnāt afraid, he merely extended his neck and cocked his head to the side as if he was trying to understand what I was sayingā¦ā¦.in hindsight, he probably couldnāt understand my rather strong Scottish accentš
My pelican chatting back š
After about 40mins, it was time for my pelican friend to say goodbye - heād rested, and was now ready for the next leg of his journey, wherever that may be to. He turned to face me one more time, before he stretched his neck, then his wingsā¦. and started a little trot into the wind, where he then soared away over the waves.
In the time that the pelican had spent next to me, I got to see every detail of that beautiful bird - his incredible feathers, his amazingly large, webbed feet, his eyes blinking, and the ridges on his super long beakā¦.it was absolutely fantastic, and I was left quite speechless for a while.
As I sat in Jake, I couldnāt believe how lucky I had just been ā pelicans are my favorite birds, so much so, that I often have JB slow his truck down, just so I can watch these incredibly beautiful birds, gliding in perfect formation, skimming the tops of the sand dunes alongside NC12. And, as youāve probably noticed, as I post lots of pics of them, I love watching pelicans during my sunrise mornings on the beach.
I stayed a little longer to take some pics of my wild and powerful ocean, that was clearly flexing its muscles, just so I could share them with youā¦.I hope you enjoy š
My favorite road.....back home to Hatteras Village
Until Next Time,
Take care, Stay safe and....if you have 5mins today...why not try to spend it in companionable silence with nature š
Love and Hugs,
Pam
